He estado compartiendo en DBuzz, algunas frases que me han servido de motivación o de inspiración. Muchas veces encontré que una simple frase en el momento preciso, venía a despejar dudas o a sacarme de la confusión que pudiera tener en ese momento. También resultaban efectivas para despertar el chispazo de creatividad que, por diferentes motivos, podía estar casi apagado.
Una que ha estado rondando mucho mi cabeza y me hizo reflexionar bastante es la de Ralph Waldo Emerson “Todo artista fue primero un amateur”.
Conocemos como amateur al principiante en un arte, oficio o profesión. Incluso, en deportes como el boxeo, existe una categoría amateur para que los boxeadores nuevos puedan competir entre ellos en igualdad.
Sin embargo, en el arte es bastante difícil encontrar esa categoría. Salvo algunos concursos, los artistas “compiten” entre todos sin tomar en cuenta que no es igual un artista con estudios, formación y años de práctica que uno que está recién iniciándose en el terreno y tiene toda la disposición y ánimo de hacerlo lo mejor posible.
Incluso he visto grupos en redes sociales donde se excluyen a quienes no alcanzan un nivel “profesional”, esto decidido bajo los estándares de quien maneja el grupo quien es el que decide quién luce profesional y quién no. Esto hace que parezca que alcanzar un “nivel profesional” fuese algo elitista al que muy pocos privilegiados tienen derecho.
Ya que interactúo con muchas personas a través de mis redes sociales, me toca ver de primera mano la angustia que sienten quienes están iniciándose y hasta el temor de mostrar sus primeras obras por temor al rechazo, la burla y la dura crítica (no siempre constructiva), sin tomar en cuenta que no se puede exigir pintar “La Mona Lisa” a una persona que está empezando, ya que esto requiere años de práctica constante, estudio y dedicación. Es como un deporte: nadie correrá un triatlón y resultar ganador si no ha estado practicando y entrenando a diario y mucho menos si está empezando las rutinas.
Fui Gerente durante años y me tocó dirigir personal. Algo que aprendí durante ese tiempo es que la forma en que se trata al personal sobre todo cuando está nuevo en el cargo, influirá en su mejora o disminución de rendimiento en sus actividades.
Los errores deben ser mostrados con objetividad para su corrección, sin necesidad de hacer sentir mal a la persona por haberlos cometido (yo también tuve muchos errores cuando empecé y conseguí tanto gente amable que me ayudó a corregirlos como gente hostil que sólo se sentían felices por hacer sentir mal a otros).
El artista ya es de por sí una persona sensible por naturaleza. Recordemos que son emociones y sentimientos los que plasmamos a través del arte, no importa la rama que sea. La falta de tacto al momento de resaltar los errores puede hacer que esa persona desista y termine lo que tal vez pudo haber sido una carrera brillante.
He tratado, en el tiempo que he estado ilustrando y haciendo manga para compartir con el público, de guiar a quienes se han acercado solicitando alguna recomendación o soporte sin importar el nivel de técnica que tengan. ¡Yo también inicié haciendo muñecos de palitos!
He visto artistas iniciar desde cero y en muy corto tiempo desarrollar su propio estilo y técnica los cuales no parecen ni remotamente lo que compartían en sus inicios. Hay artistas que continuaron su camino y me dijeron que siguieron porque se sintieron motivados por mi trabajo, lo cual me llena de mucha alegría saber que al menos pude hacer un impacto positivo en la vida de alguien.
Así que, como artistas sólo podemos confiar en el proceso y seguir. El trabajo duro y la constancia traerá la recompensa en su debido momento. Y como espectadores, deberíamos ser más empáticos y amables con los artistas amateurs, que ya hacen un gran esfuerzo en aprender y tratar de dominar el arte, haciendo que el feedback y las críticas sean para ayudarlos a mejorar y a darse cuenta de las áreas que necesitan mejora, no para hacerlos sentir menos porque aún no alcanzan cierto nivel.

I have been sharing in DBuzz, some phrases that have served me as motivation or inspiration. Many times I found that a simple phrase at the right time, came to clear doubts or to get me out of the confusion I might have at that moment. They were also effective in awakening a spark of creativity that, for various reasons, might have been almost extinguished.
One that has been going around in my head a lot and made me think a lot is Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Every artist was first an amateur".
We know as an amateur the beginner in an art, craft or profession. Even in sports such as boxing, there is an amateur category so that new boxers can compete with each other on an equal footing.
However, in art it is quite difficult to find this category. Except for some contests, artists "compete" with each other without keeping in mind that an artist with studies, training and years of practice is not the same as one who is just starting in the field and has all the willingness and spirit to do his best.
I have even seen groups in social networks where those who do not reach a "professional" level are excluded, this decided under the standards of who manages the group who is the one who decides who looks professional and who does not. This makes it seem that reaching a "professional level" is something elitist to which very few privileged people have the right.
Since I interact with many people through my social networks, I get to see firsthand the anguish felt by those who are starting out and even the fear of showing their first works for fear of rejection, ridicule and harsh criticism (not always constructive), without taking into account that you can not demand to paint "The Mona Lisa" to a person who is starting out, since this requires years of constant practice, study and dedication. It is like a sport: no one will run a triathlon and be a winner if they have not been practicing and training daily, much less if they are just starting outness.
I was a manager for years and had to manage staff. Something I learned during that time is that the way you treat your staff, especially when they are new in the position, will influence their improvement or decrease in performance in their activities.
Mistakes should be shown objectively for correction, without the need to make the person feel bad for having made them (I also had many mistakes when I started and I got both kind people who helped me correct them and hostile people who were only happy to make others feel bad).
The artist is already a sensitive person by nature. Let's remember that it is emotions and feelings that we express through art, no matter what branch it is. The lack of tact when highlighting mistakes can make that person give up and end what could have been a brilliant career.
I have tried, in the time I have been illustrating and making manga to share with the public, to guide those who have approached me asking for any recommendation or support regardless of the level of technique they have. I also started making stick figures!
I have seen artists start from scratch and in a very short time develop their own style and technique which do not even remotely resemble what they shared in their beginnings. There are artists who continued on their way and told me that they continued because they were motivated by my work, which fills me with great joy to know that at least I was able to make a positive impact on someone's life.
So, as artists we can only trust the process and keep going. Hard work and consistency will bring reward in due time. And as viewers, we should be more empathetic and kind to amateur artists, who already make a great effort in learning and trying to master the art, making feedback and criticism to help them improve and realize the areas that need improvement, not to make them feel less because they don't reach a certain level yet.
